Paul McConville – A Tribute

I can’t adequately express my dismay upon hearing of Paul McConville’s sudden death at the age of 47.

Paul was a brilliant and prolific blogger whose meticulous analysis of the legal complexities surrounding the collapse of Rangers FC is unequalled in the public domain. There is no better repository on the internet for consistently well-informed, clearly thought out, professional commentary on that subject’s legalities than scotslawthoughts.wordpress.com.
I hope that his site will remain online both as a fitting memorial to his peerless efforts and as an invaluable resource for further research.

But Paul was much, much more than a legal dude who wrote extremely long, informative posts which brought some clarity to complicated matters of Scots Law. He was an exceptionally warm and friendly person, unfailingly courteous and pleasant. I will always treasure the memory of the time that I spent in his delightful company as well as our numerous exchanges via blogs, tweets, emails, texts, phone calls, etc. He was invariably good-humoured, a splendid conversationalist on many subjects and a true gentleman.

Paul went out of his way on many occasions to offer free advice on legal matters to very many people who turned to him for help and the concern which he showed for them was genuine.  If anyone needed help, he would do his best to supply it. But Paul himself knew what it was like to go through bad times. Some years ago, he suffered a serious bout of depression which took a heavy toll on his career and led to a professional rebuke. For the avoidance of doubt (as the Great Man himself was wont to say) it should be made absolutely clear that his integrity was never questioned in any way.
However, to his immense credit, Paul never shied away from his personal responsibility for his own mistakes. He sought no excuses. He took his medicine like a man and gradually restored his position through sheer hard work and dedicated professionalism.  He gratefully and unhesitatingly acknowledged that he drew great strength in those challenging times from both his family and his personal religious faith.

Paul had great personal charm. He was self-effacing and truly modest in spite of his own considerable erudition and intelligence. He was the type of person who effortlessly made others feel that he was genuinely pleased to see them. He was also a very good listener. Even when Paul was unquestionably the smartest person in a group (which he frequently must have been!) he had a knack of making the others feel that what they had to say was more important than his own views.
He was generous with compliments but genuinely self-effacing when praise was returned. Nevertheless, I believe that he fully understood how worthwhile his blog was and he was more than entitled to be quietly proud of the impact that it made on so many people, including myself.

I will miss him greatly.

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the McConville family at this dreadful time. They will be in my thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.

May God rest you, Paul.

    Henry,
I am deeply saddened to hear the news about Paul. I have been an avid reader of his blogs but I never had the courage to write to him as I didn’t want to give people the opportunity to hit back the way that some have done in terms of the religious slant. I left Glasgow for Australia nearly 30 years ago and I still follow Celtic every day of my life. I do not miss the sectarian rubbish one bit. Paul gave incredible insight into the goings-on at Ibrox that would not normally have been aired and he showed great courage in his writings.
    May he rest in peace.

    Kind Regards,

    Billy McLaughlin

  3. May he rest in peace.

  9. I share others’ dismay at the news about Paul. His blog was a daily fix for those of us who inhabit the ‘Timternet’ even though he himself was an Albion Rovers fan. One can only imagine the sorrow and shock his family must be enduring at this time. I will try to remember them in my prayers today – I am sure that Paul will receive the rewards of a life well lived.

  10. Loved his blogs..tragedy..RIP Paul. With your heroes now..Big Jock..Tommy and Jinky

God rest Paul’s soul in heaven and a big thank you from all the bloggers over at Paul’s site to Henry for keeping a clear head and doing a fitting tribute to Paul as a man and as a contributor to truth and justice it’s only right Paul’s works should be preserved but now is not the time for debating this Paul has many friends who in the coming months or weeks will discuss this and approach the appropriate people also Paul’s site is now part of his estate as it was 1 of the most successful blogs in the country .a fine man took from us a titian of his time in memory of Paul we should always look for truth and justice and pray for him and his family he has left behind god bless you all hail hail Paul will never walk alone or his family in times of injustice pray for Paul to guide you to justice we have lost Paul to a better world but he is still with us in spirit and soul

Henry I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kind words which i will express to our family members at this very sad time. Paul was a loving Husband, Father, Son,Brother, Uncle and Godfather he will be missed greatly by a vast number of people. Please remember him in your prayers. Mark (His Brother)

    • Well said Mark. Thoughts with you all just now. George, Angela & David

    • Mark,
You are, of course, more than welcome.
Paul was a fellow about whom kind words are exceptionally easy to write and I am pleased (but in no way surprised) to note from comments here and elsewhere that I have merely articulated the impression which he made on so many others.
I’m confident that you and your family are still in the thoughts and prayers of thousands of people, including myself, who had the pleasure of knowing Paul at any level.
If there’s anything that want of any of us, you need only say the word.

  14. heartfelt condolonces to the mcConnville family from someone who read his blogs but never met him rest in peace paul

  15. A fine man. A terrible shock

  16. I remember Paul from school (both St Augustine’s Primary and St Ambrose High), and can fully support everything you have said about him. Shocked to hear this sad sad news. Thoughts and heartfelt prayers will be offered for Paul and his family. Rest In Peace.

  17. Paul Mc Conville A gentleman in the true sense of the word. R.I.P. and thank you for your wit and insight .

  18. A very nice and sincere tribute, Henry. I taught Paul at St Ambrose when Bob Crampsey was the boss. Recall saying to his Mum that you wouldn’t think they ( brother Mark) were brothers. “It’ because they are not !” So both of the boys were adopted. Mark was not as academic as Paul- very few were. Mark was excellent at football and later played in my amateur team AFC Columba. The family live near to us in Coatbridge and are very fine people. Paul was extremely gifted and it is a very sad loss for his family.

  19. Such a great loss. His blogs were a pleasant balance of fact and wit. Thoughts are with Paul’s family at this terrible time.

  20. I only knew Paul through his blogs although I’m sure he was as charming in person as he came across through his work.

I am still stunned. The world, and the blogosphere in particular, has lost a fine man.

My condolences go out to his family.

  21. Jeez, I was shocked when I heard the news…still am.
His blog was the best thing on the web. I left Glasgow in disgust many years ago and found his informative posts on the goings on at Ibrox a balm to the soul…..we weren’t paranoid after all. It took great personal courage to go out on a limb and expose that mob as well as affirm his Catholic faith in his writings.
He will be truly missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends…he did you proud.

  22. I’m devastated at this news, I have, for the past 2 years read his articles daily and will miss him very much. A terrific person, may he rest in peace. My sincere condolences to his family. Anne T.

  23. Thanks Henry. Perfectly put. After some of the difficulties that Paul has been through, I am sure his spirit will be lifted knowing the love and admiration now held for him by so many people, from so far and wide.

  24. looked forward to his articles. He will be sadly missed. Rest in peace.

  25. Just heard this terrible news.
Am a fan of Paul McConville’s from across the Atlantic; the loss is felt here.
May God rest his soul and comfort his family.

  26. I have just found out of the sad passing of Paul. He was my lawyer for a number of years and regardless of what some people think he help me a lot. To say I am shocked is an understatement to say the least. He was funny, witty and was a dam right gentleman and I have a lot to thank him for in life my sanity for one, RIP and I hope you are at peace xx

In Greek mythology, Cassandra was a cursed prophetess. She was gifted with prophecy but the curse ensured her predictions would never be believed. Not that it stopped her from speaking out. It behoves all of us to speak out about what is wrong but also about what is right. We can do that in our creativity whether it be prose, poetry or painting. What matters is the message.
